Lightning is the biggest weather killer in Michigan.   Since 1950, more than 90 people have been struck and killed by lightning in Michigan.   The majority of people struck by lightning are outside, but some have been struck by lightning even when in their houses.

If you hear thunder, you are close enough to a thunderstorm to be struck by lightning.
