Winter Storm on Feb 1-2, 2005 |

Cold air spread across Arkansas from the north in
late January. High temperatures on January 25th were in the
60s/lower 70s, with readings in the 30s/40s to close out the month
and into early February. Late on February 1st, a storm system
formed in south Texas and spread moisture northward. A cold rain
overspread southern Arkansas during the afternoon of the 1st, with
snow developing in the northern counties after dark. |

Arctic high pressure ("H") from the Great Lakes and Ohio
Valley into the central Plains was keeping cold air in Arkansas in early February, 2005. A storm system
("L") was spreading warmer air/moisture into the region
from the south on February 1st/2nd...with the atmosphere becoming
a little too warm for snow in most areas. However, it stayed cold
enough for snow in the northwest counties. |

Soundings (temperature/dewpoint profiles with height)
indicated that temperatures were above freezing at Little
Rock, AR from the ground to above 5000 feet (a warm layer
to melt any falling snow) with below freezing temperatures
from the ground up at Springfield, MO during the morning
of 02/02/2005. |

| In preparation for the snow, the National Weather
Service in Little Rock issued a Winter Weather Advisory during the
afternoon of the 1st. To check out the

| Light snow continued into the morning hours of the
2nd...mainly north and west of Fort Smith (Sebastian County),
Clinton (Van Buren County) and Mountain Home (Baxter County).
Temperatures in these areas hovered in the lower 30s. |

| In the picture: An enhanced water vapor satellite image showed rain
ending/drying over much of Arkansas during the morning hours of
02/02/2005. However, thicker clouds/light snow was evident across
the northern counties. |

Snow ended during the afternoon of the 2nd. Amounts
reached 4 to 6 inches in parts of north central/northwest
Arkansas...including up to 5 inches in the Harrison (Boone County)
