            PRESIDENT'S PROPOSED FY 1997 BUDGET FOR
              COMMERCE'S TECHNOLOGY ADMINISTRATION
                 ANNOUNCED AT MARCH 18 BRIEFING

     Reporters are invited to hear Commerce Secretary Ronald H. Brown
discuss the President's proposed fiscal year 1997 budget for the
Department of Commerce at a briefing on Monday, March 18, 1996.  The
briefing will begin at approximately 10 a.m. in Room 4830 of the
Commerce Department, 14th St. and Constitution Ave. N.W., Washington,
D.C.

     Immediately following the Secretary's briefing, reporters are
encouraged to stay in Room 4830 and hear more details about the FY 1997
request for Commerce's Technology Administration, which includes the
Office of the Under Secretary for Technology, Office of Technology
Policy, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the
National Technical Information Service.  Under Secretary for Technology
Mary Good will give a brief overview of the proposed TA budget and then
answer questions.

     A news release, detailed budget summary, review of the ongoing FY
1996 budget process and other relevant materials will be available for
reporters at the TA briefing.  Anyone not able to attend can request
