Natural Resources

The Pike & San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron & Comanche National Grasslands is open to anyone, but how much do you really know about the plants, animals, and other natural features of the area?

Find out more about the physical, biological and ecological aspects of southeastern Colorado that make the area unique. The spectacular landscape of the forest was shaped by continental and alpine glaciers. Valleys were carved out and lakes left behind. This created the land that early American Indians inhabited, and Eastern settlers viewed in awe.

Numerous streams, lakes, reservoirs, varied topography, climate, and vegetation of the Pike & San Isabel National Forests and Cimarron & Comanche National Grasslands provide habitats for an abundance of native fish and wildlife, including many of the most striking animals found in North America.
