In Memoriam Professsor Warren S. Wooster

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

A few hours ago, I received a sad message from Professsor Gotthilf Hempel informing me that "Warren Wooster passed on yesterday October 29 in Seattle. As you know he was one of the fathers of SCOR, PICES and he was the first Secretary of IOC almost 50 years ago. We lost one of the outstanding promoters of international oceanography and of mutual assistance, particularly with Latin America. Being a chemical oceanographer, he was one of the few great scientists who brought together physical, chemical and biological oceanography in support of fisheries science. To me he was a good friend and advisor."

Patricio A. Bernal, Executive Secretary of IOC

Pakistan setting up earthquake and tsunami warning system

training-pakistan.jpgPakistan is setting up an earthquake detection and tsunami early warning system supported by  UNESCO and its Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).

Installed at Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) centres in Karachi and Islamabad, the system can issue information on seismic activity within five minutes of its occurrence. Besides providing early warnings of land-based earthquakes to civil defence authorities, the system enables the national tsunami warning centre at PMD to send out speedy tsunami alerts for the Pakistani coastline.
