The landscape to the north of the Black Sea is turning an autumn brown as summer draws to a close. A handful of fires (red dots) were burning in Ukraine, left, and southwestern Russia, right, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this image on September 19, 2004. The fires are probably related to agriculture. Tan sediment colors the shallow Sea of Azov, the northern section of the Black Sea.
