Program Description
The initial activation in September 2003 of what is now the Upstate South Carolina MRC, began as a single-county unit. Since then, SC Dept. of Health and Environmental Control has gone through structural changes, from county-oriented districts, to statewide regions. The MRC unit was temporarily put on hold until restructuring was completed. MRC units in South Carolina are now under the direct supervision of SC DHEC Office of Public Health Preparedness. The Upstate South Carolina MRC covers SC DHEC's Region 2, which includes the following counties: Cherokee, Greenville, Pickens, Spartanburg, and Union. After SC DHEC restructuring, the current Upstate South Carolina MRC unit was re-activated and is now in its early stages of development. The mission of the Upstate MRC will be to train volunteers to augment public health and emergency preparedness responsibilities. One of our goals is to recruit medical and health volunteers. This recruitment is being done in conjunction with marketing the South Carolina Statewide Emergency Registry of Volunteers (SCSERV). Another goal is to have volunteers participate in public health initiatives, as well as various training programs through CERT, Red Cross, NIMS, and AHEC. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To sign up as a volunteer with the South Carolina MRCs, please register in the South Carolina Statewide Emergency Registry of Volunteers (SCSERV) database at: http://www.scserv.gov/
