Press releases from the NASA centers and from NASA researchers.

NASA Research Indicates Oxygen on Earth 2.5 Billion Years Ago
September 27 — NASA-funded astrobiologists have found evidence of oxygen present in Earth's atmosphere earlier than previously known, pushing back the timeline for the rise of oxygen in the atmosphere. More

Greenland Snow Melting Hit Record High in High Places
September 25 — A new NASA-supported study reports that 2007 marked an overall rise in the melting trend over the entire Greenland ice sheet and, remarkably, melting in high-altitude areas was greater than ever at 150 percent more than average. More

'Remarkable' Drop in Arctic Sea Ice Raises Questions
September 25 — Melting Arctic sea ice has shrunk to a 29-year low, significantly below the minimum set in 2005, according to preliminary figures from the National Snow and Ice Data Center, and NASA scientists are working to understand this sudden speed-up of sea ice decline and what it means for the future of Earth's northern polar region. More

Amazon Forest Unexpectedly Resilient to Drought
September 21 — The extensive forests of South America's Amazon are turning out to be tougher than expected when it comes to withstanding the onslaughts of a changing climate, according to scientists who, using the insightful eyes of two NASA satellites, have shown that one of the worst droughts in decades could not stop the undisturbed regions of the Amazon forest from "greening up." More

NASA Researchers Find Snowmelt in Antarctica Creeping Inland
September 20 — In a new NASA study, researchers using 20 years of data from space-based sensors have confirmed that Antarctic snow is melting farther inland from the coast over time, melting at higher altitudes than ever and increasingly melting on Antarctica's largest ice shelf. More

NASA Celebrates a Decade Observing Climate Impacts on Health of World's Oceans
September 19 — A decade after launch, a NASA-managed satellite's data have proved instrumental in countless applications and helped researchers paint a picture of a changing climate - accomplishments that scientists discussed today, on the satellite's tenth anniversary, in briefings at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. More

NASA Keeps Eye on Ozone Layer Amid Montreal Protocol's Success
September 13 — NASA scientists working to answer modern questions posed by Earth's ozone layer will join researchers from around the world to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol, an international treaty designed to reduce the hole in the protective ozone layer. More

Wildfire Imaging Missions Continue
September 7 — The third in a series of wildfire imaging demonstration flights will take NASA's Ikhana unmanned aircraft and its thermal-infrared imaging payload over wildfires burning in central Washington and Oregon, as well as in central and southern California. More

New Sensors Warn of Hurricane's Strength
September 6 — A new study supported by NASA and the U.S. Office of Naval Research takes forecasters one step further to improving their ability to predict just how powerful an oncoming storm may become by using highly-sensitive sensors located thousands of miles from the storm to detect lightning outbreaks within a hurricane's most dangerous area.
