Port of Entry: Immigration

Welcome! On this journey, you will assume the role of historical detective and search for clues to America's past in American Memory, the historical collections of the Library of Congress. You will investigate photographs and eyewitness accounts of immigrant life in America.

Before you embark on your investigation, you need to make some preparations. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • To begin, scroll to the bottom of this page. Click on Start the Investigation. On following pages, click on Ahead to move one step ahead in your investigation. To move back one step, click on Back. To return to the beginning, click on Start.

  • Every detective records important observations and clues.
    notebook icon Look for the notebook to help you record and remember important information.
  • To take side trips and search for more clues, click on words that are underlined and in a different color. These words are "linked" to other photographs or pieces of information.

  • You can complete this investigation in 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how long you study each clue and how many side trips you take.

  • You may end your investigation at any time by closing your web browser (on the browser menu bar, click on File, then Close).
