Environmental Impact Statements

NUREG-1437, "Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants," Final Supplement 28, regarding Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station Draft Report for Comment, was published January 2007.

This supplement documents the NRC staff's review of the environmental issues at Oyster Creek regarding AmerGen Energy Company, LLC’s application for license renewal of that facility. The supplement was prepared in accordance with 10 CFR 51.71. This supplemental environmental impact statement includes the staff's analysis that considers and weighs the environmental effects of the proposed action, the environmental impacts of alternatives to the proposed action, and alternatives available for reducing or avoiding adverse impacts. It also includes the staff's recommendation regarding the proposed actions.

Safety Evaluation Report

The NRC staff reviewed the Oyster Creek license renewal application for compliance with the requirements of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 54, "Requirements for Renewal of Operating Licenses for Nuclear Power Plants," and prepared this report to document its findings. the document was issued in August 2006, as "Safety Evaluation Report With Open Items Related to the License Renewal of Oyster Creek Generating Station". The report is available in ADAMS under accession number ML062300330.

In December 2006, the NRC staff issued an updated version of the “Safety Evaluation Report Related to the License Renewal of Oyster Creek Generating Station.” The report is available in ADAMS under accession number ML063630424.

In March 2007, the NRC staff issued the final “Safety Evaluation Report Related to the License Renewal of Oyster Creek Generating Station.” The report is available in ADAMS under accession number ML070890637.

Atomic Safety and Licensing Board (ASLB) Initial Decision

On September 24 and 25, 2007, the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board (ASLB) conducted an evidentiary hearing at Toms River, NJ to consider whether AmerGen's aging management programs were sufficient to maintain an adequate safety margin. On December 18, 2007, The ASLB rendered it's initial decision that "AmerGen has demonstrated that the fequency of its planned UT measurements, in combination with the other elements of its aging management program, provide assurance that the sand bed region of the drywell shell will maintain the necessary safety margin during the period of extended operation." The decision is available in ADAMS under accession number ML073520402.
