USACE Crosslake Recreation Area- Maintenance

Position Description
Maintenance Volunteer – 1 couple, 18 years of age or older needed, May 1, 2009 through Sept. 30, 2009 to perform daily raking of 3 playgrounds, 1 volleyball and 1 horseshoe area; the occasional repair of playground, horseshoe and basketball court equipment; weekly safety monitoring and minor repair of all fishing and launch docks; the replacement and staining of park benches, picnic tables, fences, garbage can blinds and vault toilets. The Corps of Engineers will provide all supplies to complete duties. Volunteers are required to work a minimum of 20 hours per week in exchange for a 30-amp campsite with water and sewer hookup and the use of all campground facilities and amenities. NPS Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument
Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument (Silver City, NM)
Location: Silver City, NM 88061
Position Description
Volunteers are asked to make a 3 month/32 hour a week minimum commitment for October through April, and a 4month/32 hour a week minimum commitment in the high visitation season of May through September.

Location Description

The National Monument is located in the Gila National Forest and Gila Wilderness area of southwestern New Mexico, and is operated by the National Park Service. The park includes the 700 year old Mogollon Cliff Dwellings and the multi-agency Gila Visitor center. Volunteers give daily guided tours of the cliff dwellings, and provide visitor assistance in all areas of the park. Recreational opportunities include hiking and backpacking, horse trails, kayaking, wilderness hot springs, wildlife observation, and outstanding solitude.

INTERPRETATION volunteers are needed to provide guided tours of the cliff dwellings and share information about the the area's cultural and natural resources. VISITOR CENTER STAFF are needed to provide wilderness, cliff dwelling, and area information to visitors and sell bookstore items through Western National Parks Association. MAINTENANCE volunteer opportunities exist for various field and shop.

The main visitor season is May—October, but year-round staffing needs exist. Limited housing may be available including RV pads with full, paid hookups; or private dorm rooms with shared kitchen and bath facilities.

BLM El Mirage Visitor Contact Representative
El Mirage Visitor Center (El Mirage, CA)
Location: El Mirage, CA 92301
Position Description
Volunteer will provide information to visitors on things to do and see in the El Mirage Recreation Area and assist in the new El Mirage Visitor Center. Hosts may perform visitor contact services, facility maintenance (Restocking paper products and light sweeping, dusting, etc.) and help man the new visitor center. The hosts will gather useful information and keep the supervisor informed of any problems in the area. If the host observes what is or may be an illegal activity, the host will share that information with the supervisor or law enforcement staff. Other duties may be assigned as mutually agreed upon. The El Mirage Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Area is located in the Mojave Desert on the western edge of San Bernardino County near the Los Angeles County Line. This Off-Highway vehicle riding area attracts a variety of activities. During summer months, temperatures can reach a high of 120 degrees F. Summer thunderstorms can come with spectacular force, although most of the minimal precipitation falls during winter months. Winter lows can fall to 5 degrees F. at night, with highs in the 60 to 70 degree F. range during the day. Spring and Fall temperatures are moderate and fall between these extremes. We are looking for volunteers who like to talk, meet, and communicate with a variety of people. A good attitude, ability to listen, and ability to relay information are necessary. Volunteer must have a valid driver’s license. In return for your volunteer work, you will be given a camping site with free water and electric hookups and a small monthly stipend. You will need to provide a recreation vehicle. Hosts will work a minimum of 30 hours per week, which includes weekend days. Hosts will have two consecutive weekdays off. Shifts will vary depending upon Visitor Center needs.

BLM Campground Host
Rainbow Basin Natural Area (Barstow, CA)

Position Description
The volunteer provides interpretive information to overnight and day use visitors. The volunteer will be knowledgeable in the areas of regulations, recreation opportunities, flora, fauna and area history. The volunteer makes contacts with visitors to explain rules and regulations and provide written or verbal information to visitors. In the event of problems with visitors, the volunteer will contact the sector law enforcement ranger or the Federal Interagency Communications Center (FICC) and end the contact. The volunteer may gather information such as vehicle description and license number, but will take no action against violators.

The volunteer records and reports public use information, vandalism and problems, wildlife sightings, and other items of general interest to the area. This data will be submitted to the volunteer’s supervisor on a monthly basis.

The volunteer performs light maintenance on public lands within the Rainbow Basin Natural Area. These duties include, but are not limited to: litter pick up, installation and maintenance of signs, installation and maintenance of bulletin boards, rehabilitating disturbed sites, and fencing hazardous sites.

Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Volunteer will need fully contained RV.

NPS National Public Lands Day & National Scout Day!
Prince William Forest Park (Triangle, VA)

Position Description
This one-day volunteer event invites individuals and groups to join in an effort to work on volunteer projects within Prince William Forest Park in celebration of Public Lands Day, National Scout Day, and the 75th anniversary of the Civilian Conservation Corps. Projects include cabin repair, trail maintenance, tree planting, etc. Breakfast and lunch will be provided!

Registration begins at 8:00 A.M. at Cabin Camp 3 (Camp Orenda) with a special welcoming ceremony to follow. Volunteers will work alongside rangers and park personnel from 9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. making improvements and major contributions to the natural and cultural resources of the park.

Volunteers should bring water, sunscreen, gloves, hats, and sturdy shoes.

FWS Winter Maintence

Starting mid-Decembe 2008 to mid April, 2009 we are seeking a maintenance volunteer with heavy equipment and light carpentry experience to help with primarily snow removal, and possibly heavy equipment operation. Other duties would be assisting with antler retrival, facilities and small equipment maintenance. The National Elk Refuge will provide housing and utilities in exchange for 32 hours of work per week. The National Elk Refuge is home to over 7,000 elk and 1,000 bison each winter. Come join us during our busy season to experience this flagship National Wildlife Refuge.
