MIDWEST CITY, Okla. -- The Disaster Recovery Center in Picher will be open on Memorial Day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The center, located in the community center at 116 Devilliers Circle, opened Tuesday, May 20. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. The center serves those who were affected by the severe weather, tornadoes and flooding that began May 10 in Ottawa County.
Officials with the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management (OEM) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) urge those who experienced losses to first contact their insurance agents, if they had insurance, and then register with FEMA. The toll-free FEMA registration number, which is staffed from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week, is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7565 for the hearing impaired. Registration can also be accomplished online at www.fema.gov. Those who wish may register by phone at the Disaster Recovery Center.
After registering for assistance, those affected by the disaster may visit the center to talk to representatives of various state and federal programs who are at the center. FEMA applicant assistance workers can view applications online and provide guidance. Representatives of the U.S. Small Business Administration can provide information about the administration's low-interest loans that are available for residential and business losses that are not fully compensated by insurance.
No cash, checks, debit cards or vouchers are distributed at the center. Its purpose is to provide information to assist in recovery.
FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terrorism.
