Alaskan Gambling Contest Yields Treasure Trove of Scientific Data
October 25 — A celebrated betting pool in Alaska is providing researchers with a remarkably accurate record of global climate change, according to a new study. (Stanford University release) More

Autumn Foliage May Affect Air Quality, Climate
October 25 — Autumn leaves that light up hillsides in bold strokes of gold and other colors also appear to play a role in regional air quality and climate. (National Center for Atmospheric Research release) More

Corals Lock El Niño History in Radiocarbon
October 22 — A scientist uses radiocarbon levels in corals to derive long records of El Niño variability in the equatorial Pacific. (University of Arizona release) More

Earth's Orbital Oscillations May Have Controlled Ice Ages
October 17 — Records from the sea floor around Antarctica show ice sheet advances and retreats that match Milankovitch cycles - variations in the Earth's orbit around the sun, in the tilt of the Earth's axis and in the direction the planet's axis is pointing. The finding, reported in the British journal Nature, suggests a link between these orbital oscillations and the timing of Antarctic ice ages. More

Study Shows Waves in Southern California, North Pacific More Powerful Over Last 50 Years
October 16 — Since 1975, intensified waves rolling in from the west, increasing coastal impacts. Research indicated that the change may be attributed directly to increases in upper-level winds. More

Accumulated Change Courts Ecosystem Catastrophe
October 10 — After decades of gradual change by humans, many of the world's natural ecosystems appear on the verge of catastrophe, scientists say. (University of Wisconsin-Madison release) More

Common Native Plant of Great Plains Threatened by Climate Change
October 4 — A common prairie plant could face severe reduction in numbers if climate conditions in the Midwest change as predicted, according to a study in the journal Science. (University of Virginia/ University of Minnesota release) More
