About this Organization

We are part of a traditional mountain community that inspires celebration, education, and volunteerism as tools to promote healing and social change. We have a special commitment to the people of the southern West Virginia mountains, especially children. The center follows the dream of founder Edwina Pepper: a community-based education for local children, steeped in Appalachian heritage and the world. The ecology center focuses on the ecology of the region and the world. Programs include youth summer camps, Project FLOW (watershed education), outdoor classrooms, Ridge Kids, alternative breaks (high school, college, and church groups) hospitality for retreats and recovery. Our site is adjacent to a mountain top removal site, where mountains are blown up in order to extract the underlying coal. This process causes environmental, human, and economic destruction. By using energy efficient technology and buying sustainable energy, we hope to stop demand for this process.
