Developing Mentoring Opportunities for Kosovo’s Law Students

The USAID-supported Professional Legal Development Program hosted a series of roundtable discussions earlier this year which focused on ways to increase effective mentorship opportunities, generate program financing and produce recommendations for improvements and future growth. The program is implemented by the American Bar Association/Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (ABA/CEELI).

Commonly known as the “legal intern (“Praktikant”) program”, the initiative provides financial and organizational support to law graduates while completing the mandatory one-year apprenticeship which is a prerequisite for taking the Kosovo bar examination.

The roundtables, organized by the Kosovo Chamber of Advocates’ Praktikant Committee—a key ABA/CEELI working partner—were composed of current and past praktikants, their mentors, and other lawyers. A strong message that emerged from the discussions was the need for expanded placements. Lawyers who had not yet participated in the program were urged to create opportunities for on-the-job training in their offices, as a means to provide valuable professional guidance to the next generation of Kosovo lawyers.
