Azerbaijani Media Students Learn to Ask Tough Questions

“Tell Me” is a bi-monthly production of a local USAID media project that provides opportunities for students from the nine Baku-based journalism faculties to hone their skills as future news correspondents. “The Journalist”, a group of forty-seven journalism students under the mentorship of Baku State University professor Nasiman Yagublu meets every other Friday to interview newsmakers, opinion-shapers, and others who play an active role in Azerbaijan’s development.

The program’s format was designed so that the students could freely decide what questions to ask and, if the reply is not satisfactory, they may continue to expound on their query until an appropriate response is given. Students are encouraged to pose candid questions that would likely go unasked in this society, where normal press conferences consist of a government spokesperson reading a statement without being questioned by the press.
