“Fast Track” Offers Boost for Tajikistan’s Education Sector

In late December, it was announced that Tajikistan will be awarded $18.4 million through the Fast Track Initiative to be used in support of the education sector in 2006-2007. Tajikistan is the only country in the region that was awarded Fast Track Initiative funds. USAID, together with the German Development Bank, Asian Development Bank, UNICEF, and the World Bank, is on a steering committee which will determine how this money will be spent and what funding mechanism will be used.

Launched in 2002, the Fast Track Initiative is a global partnership between donors and developing countries to ensure accelerated progress towards the Millennium Development Goal of universal primary education by 2015. All low-income countries that demonstrate serious political commitment to achieve universal primary education are eligible to receive support from the initiative.

USAID is one of two bilateral donors working on education issues in Tajikistan. USAID’s education sector activities include the Participation, Education and Knowledge Strengthening Program (PEAKs), implemented by the Academy for Educational Development, and Improving Basic Education in Tajikistan Program (IBET), implemented by Aga Khan Foundation. Working since 2003, the programs provide assistance to the education sector through training and material support to 23 base schools. These schools demonstrate new methods and management practices and provide training to nearly 100 surrounding schools.
