County Clerk Maggie Toulouse Oliver, Secretary of State Mary Herrera, University of New Mexico Professor Lonna Atkeson and David J. Becker, Project Director for the Pew Charitable Trusts’ Make Voting Work initiative, will announce the results of the Bernalillo County 2006 Post-Election Audit on Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at 10:00 am at the Bernalillo County Voting Machine Warehouse.

The Clerk’s office participated in a rigorous audit of voting systems, led by the University of New Mexico, together with a team of election experts from the California Institute of Technology  and the University of Utah .

This audit is the first of its kind conducted in the state of New Mexico and serves as a guide for state audit standards that will be employed in November’s general election. New Mexico will begin conducting a required audit of 2% of voting systems statewide following the 2008 General Election to assess the performance and integrity of the election system.

The audit is funded by the Pew Center on the States’ Make Voting Work initiative and is one of more than 20 pilot projects being undertaken with support from the Pew Charitable Trusts and JEHT Foundation throughout the United States. Additional funding has been provided by the Bernalillo County Clerk’s office and the New Mexico Secretary of State’s office.
