The blended satellite and in-situ temperature product above shows the presence of large temperature anomalies in several regions of the world in January. Much above average temperatures occurred across many land areas in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The largest warm anomalies covered parts of the northern plains of the United States and most of Canada, Alaska, eastern Europe, western Russia and Australia. These areas had anomalies greater than 4C (7.2F). Other positive anomalies were recorded in parts of Argentina, South Africa and Southeast Asia. In contrast, cold anomalies were noted across central Siberia, northern and central Mongolia and across northeast China. Temperatures in this region were more than 4 C (7.2F) below average. Media reports indicate that parts of northeast China are experiencing their coldest winter in decades. Complete details on the U.S. and global climate of January 2001 are available in other sections of this report.
