Job Definition
Human resource managers hire employees, plan, direct, and coordinate the personnel policies within a dealership. They maintain such functions as administering employee compensation, recruitment and personnel policies, and regulatory compliance.
As with all positions within dealerships, human resource managers are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards.
Job Duties
Job duties for a human resources manager include:
- Administering compensation, benefits, safety and recreation programs, as well as advising dealership managers on organizational policy matters, such as equal employment opportunities and sexual harassment, and recommending any needed changes.
- Working with personnel to forecast employment needs, interviewing and hiring new staff, dealing with understaffing, administering disciplinary and termination procedures.
- Analyzing statistical data and reports to identify and determine causes of personnel problems and developing recommendations for improvement of personnel policies and practices.
- Determining training needs to design employee development and health and safety programs.
- Maintaining records and compiling statistical reports concerning personnel-related data such as hires, transfers, performance appraisals and absenteeism rates.
- Overseeing the evaluation, classification and rating of occupations and job positions.
- Providing current and prospective employees with information about policies, job duties, working conditions, wages and opportunities for promotion and employee benefits.
Job Requirements
Human resource managers should have four years of professional human resource or office manager experience or any equivalent combination of experience, education and/or training approved by dealership management.
Human resource managers should have good communication and organizational skills, as well as be good judges of character.
Education Requirements
A bachelor's degree in personnel, business or public administration is preferred.
Career Path
Human resources managers may begin their career at an entry-level human resources positions and move up the career ladder with experience.
Salary Range
The average annual earnings of human resources managers are approximately $30,000 to $50,000. Earnings vary depending on experience, and the dealer's geographic location and size.
Some dealerships, especially larger ones, may pay bonuses and have special incentive programs for exceeding sales quotas.
