Job Definition
The director of marketing reviews the dealership's customer base, as well as the local automotive retail market, to determine the demand for products and services offered by the dealership and its competitors. The director then creates advertising and promotional materials to attract customers to the dealership for sales and/or service.
As with all positions within dealerships, directors of marketing are expected to uphold the highest ethical standards.
Job Duties
Job duties for a director of marketing include:
- Creating marketing goals to ensure that the dealer gains business.
- Overseeing the development and execution of the dealership's advertising and promotional activities, such as print, direct mail media, radio and TV commercials. This includes working with graphic artists and writers to ensure proper production of promotional materials.
- Working with advertising agencies to create campaigns for the dealership.
- Formulating, directing and coordinating marketing activities and policies to promote the dealership and services, and working with advertising and promotion managers as needed.
- Identifying, developing and evaluating a marketing strategy, based on knowledge of establishment objectives, market characteristics and cost and markup factors.
- Initiating market research studies and analyzing their findings to ensure the highest level of advertising effectiveness.
- Negotiating contracts with vendors and distributors to manage collateral material distribution and developing distribution strategies.
- Working with manufacturers to coordinate campaigns with new vehicle promotions.
Job Requirements
The marketing director must have knowledge of basic demographics and marketing principles as well as knowledge of the automobile industry. Five to seven years experience in marketing, advertising or public relations is preferred.
The director of marketing should have good writing skills and basic graphic design knowledge to design printed advertisements.
The director of marketing requires strong verbal communication skills and must be able to represent the dealership to the news media.
Education Requirements
A marketing degree is preferred, as is a strong background in communications, advertising and business. Courses in graphic-design, public relations and advertising sales are helpful.
Salary Range
The average annual earnings of directors of marketing are approximately $33,000 to $60,000. Earnings vary depending on experience, and the dealer's geographic location and size.
