Polar bears can be found from Canada to Eastern
Russia. The only area not covered by white fur are its eyes and its black nose. An adult
polar bear weighs 1,500 pounds and has a small head and a long neck. Polar bears live most
of their lives on the arctic ice pack but will come ashore occasionally. Ashore they eat
some vegetation but their diet consists mainly of ringed seals, walrus, stranded whales,
birds, and fish. Polar bears are strong swimmers. They have been seen swimming 50 miles
from the nearest ice or land. Cubs, usually two, are born in December. They weigh about a
pound at birth and will stay with their mother for about two years. |
