         OSM AWARDS HOPI TRIBE $100,000 GRANT FOR WATER QUALITY
                          IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
                                    
The Interior Department s Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and
Enforcement (OSM) has awarded the Hopi Indian Tribe a $100,000 grant to fund a
water quality improvement project at Hopi Junior-Senior High School.

Legislation was enacted in 1987 authorizing Indian Tribes to operate their own
AML reclamation programs, while OSM continues to administer the federal regulatory
program for coal mine reclamation on Indian Lands and the AML fund.
