Registration for the money-saving Flexible Spending Account (FSA) begins next month, and BLET members are encouraged to take advantage of this valuable new health and welfare benefit. The program allows BLET members to pay for doctor co-pays and other medical expenses with pretax dollars.

A BLET member working as an employee of the Indiana Rail Road died on September 10 after a tanker derailed at low speed from a rail spur at a Terre Haute company that makes railroad ties.

SWCM poker tournament to raise money for scholarship fund

Openings are available for the Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament at the BLET’s Southwestern Convention Meeting (SWCM) this coming weekend. Seventy-five percent of the proceeds from the tournament go to support the SWCM’s Scholarship Fund.

Railroad worker relief fund seeks donations

As in 2005 after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, a Railroad Relief Fund has been set up to benefit the Southern Region BLET members who have been seriously impacted by Hurricane Gustav and now Hurricane Ike.

Brother Richard D. “Ricky” Pendarvis, a member of BLET Division 523 in Chickasha, Okla., was killed in the line of duty on August 29 when his Union Pacific locomotive collided with a propane tanker truck near Medford, Okla.

SWCM pre-registration deadline is August 29

The pre-registration deadline for the 2008 SWCM in St. Louis is fast approaching. You must have your pre-registration postmarked by Friday, August 29, to receive the pre-registration rate of $115. Anyone registering after August 29 will have to pay $140 for late registration.

DOT delays mandatory direct observation regulation to November 1

The U.S. Department of Transportation is postponing from August 25 to November 1 a new regulation that would subject employees to mandatory direct observation during drug tests conducted when a transportation worker returns to work after a positive drug test and during follow-up drug tests.
