A regional workshop on improving forest law compliance and governance in tropical West Africa was held in Accra, Ghana, on 15-17 July 2008, co-sponsored by ITTO and FAO, and hosted by the Ghana Forestry Commission. This event was attended by 62 participants, including government representatives from Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Togo as well as representatives of civil society (community groups and NGOs), private companies, environmental bureaus, and regional and international organizations. Participants analyzed the problems and possible solutions related to illegal extraction of forest resources and governance in the management of forest ecosystems in the region, leading to the recently released Accra Declaration which contains the workshop's findings and recommendations.

ITTO's most recent report on forest certification shows that while tropical countries still account for only about 5% of the world's certified forests, more countries are making progress towards independent certification of forest management or developing their own certification standards. The report highlights factors inhibiting faster progress towards certification in the tropics and makes detailed recommendations for all stakeholders.
