REPORTING TO THE BOUTWELL

CGC BOUTWELL makes every effort to contact incoming personnel.
However, our hardest group to reach is the non-rates reporting from
Procedures for Reporting
New personnel should transfer their families with them to the area, however, when initially checking into the ship please do not bring family members onboard the ship until check-in process is complete.
The uniform for reporting to the ship is Tropical Blue Long unless you are
flying out to the ship while we are underway; then you should fly and report in
civilian clothing. Call the Ship (510) 437-3447 and advise your sponsor
or Officer of the Deck (OOD) of your arrival date and plans. Please make
plans to report to the ship Monday thru Friday between 0700 and 1200. The
reason we ask this is because on weekends, holidays, and after liberty has been
granted the only personnel on board are the duty section and therefore we are
unable to properly check you in. If you must report other than the
hours listed, your sponsor may not be on board, but the OOD will help you until
the next work day. We ask if you are flying into
Upon arrival you can expect to be met by your sponsor. He or she will assist you in locating your assigned berthing and help you get settled in. We find this to be a very important step in welcoming a new shipmate. Your sponsor will assist you in your check in process ensuring that you have met with the appropriate personnel. The check in process can take up to 10 days.
It is standard practice to introduce our new shipmates at quarters and see that they meet with the Command Chief, Department Head, Executive Officer, and Commanding Officer with-in 48 hours of reporting.

Typical SA/SN Job Assignment
Assigned to the Deck Department. The first six months for a Seaman or Seaman Apprentice reporting aboard will be a busy and exciting time. Underway a Seaman participates in all deck evolutions under the supervision of the Boatswains Mates, and is responsible for handling mooring lines, anchoring the ship, raising and lowering of the ship's small boats, serving as small boat crewman, and performing rescue-swimmer duties. A Seaman typically stands two 4-hour watches a day while underway. In port seaman will stand watch every 4 days. A Seaman can work as a helicopter tie down team member during flight operations, and may become a boarding team member to help enforce laws and treaties. All Seaman will help the galley by serving as a mess cook on a rotating basis. Mess cooking is an important aspect of habitability and crew morale and demonstrates the support side of Coast Guard operations. Seaman also serve on damage control teams during general quarters and general emergency; fighting fires, controlling flooding, and dewatering spaces. Seaman also serve as a vital part of the ship's defense force by manning machine gun mounts and the MK 75/76mm cannon. By the end of four months on board, all Seaman will complete the basic damage control course, qualify as an in port watch stander, and become qualified on helm and lookout. The Coast Guard allows seaman to advance to petty officer in certain ratings through "on the job training", called striking, in lieu of formal schools. Due to the diversity of rates on board, all of these rates are available. A Seaman can strike Boatswains Mate –Deck (BM), Damage Controlman (DC), Electricians Mate (EM), Food Service Specialist (FS), Machinery Technician (MK), Boatswains Mate -Navigation (BM), Store Keeper (SK), or Yeoman (YN). If not striking a rate, many Seaman apply for an "A" school in their desired rate. With a wide variety of opportunities, BOUTWELL is a great learning platform for new Seaman.
Typical FA/FN Job Assignment
You will be assigned to either the Main Propulsion Division or the Auxiliary Division where you will begin the qualification process while you assist your assigned Division with the daily work routine. As a Fireman Apprentice, you will qualify as a Security Watch stander in port and underway and an Auxiliary (Generator) Watch stander in port. Underway a Fireman can expect to stand two 4-hour watches a day until full qualification is obtained. In port or underway, you will be required to complete your Damage Control Personnel Qualification Standards (DCPQS) within four months of arrival. The Damage Control Officer sets up a training plan that covers all of the required sections every two months. You may find the training challenging at first, but will find it easily completed within the required time. This qualification is necessary for the survivability of the ship. Damage Control is the responsibility of the entire crew from the Commanding Officer right down to our newest member. During and after the DCPQS qualification you may serve as a member of one of our repair lockers or be a member of engineering repair (engine room) during general quarters or general emergency.

WATCH AND DUTY ROTATION FOR SA/SN
Inport Personnel will stand a security watch; standing a 1-in-4 during the
qualification process and then 1-in-6 once qualified.
Underway personnel will stand helm, messenger, and lookout watch, usually a
1-in-4 to 1-in-6 rotation.
WATCH AND DUTY ROTATION FOR FA/FN
Inport personnel will stand an inport security watch; standing a 1-in-4 during the qualification process and then 1-in 5, dogged weekend, once qualified. Underway personnel will stand security and auxiliary watch in a 1-in-4 to a 1-in-6 rotation.
HOW MUCH PERSONAL STORAGE SPACE
Each crew member has a rack that is 6’3” long, 6” deep, and 2’2” wide. Each member also has a locker that is 5’7” tall, 1’1” wide, and 1’7” wide.
LAUNDRY
The ship has six washers, and eight dryers. Instructions on how to use the machines can be found on the unit itself. There is also a schedule of when you are allowed to use laundry. It is divided among the departments, chiefs, and officers. Please do your laundry on your day. Also, feel free to bring your own detergent and dryer sheets. Laundry is open to all hands while in port and after 2000 while underway.
SLEEPING BAGS
Sleeping bags are authorized for use. However, the sleeping bags cannot be nylon, and must be fire resistant. This is a safety issue.
PERSONAL ELECTRONICS
Personal electronics, such as TV, VCR, Play Stations, DVD, Stereos, and laptops are allowed on board. If you have or desire to have personal electronics for the up coming patrol, now is the time to act. Submit a chit to your Berthing MAA requesting to have personal electronics. Insure the items have been inspected by the CMAA and that the items are properly secured for sea.
PERSONAL WEAPONS
Do not report with personal weapons i.e. gun, machete, bow, OC pepper spray, numb chucks, etc. Personal weapons are not allowed to be brought on board Support Center Alameda or BOUTWELL without prior approval. Therefore they should be left somewhere safe while you travel. Once on board you will be briefed on BOUTWELL's personal weapons policy.

Once qualified, you may be involved in many aspects of shipboard life such as flight deck operations and law enforcement boarding teams. Inport and underway we enjoy morale events which include swim calls, bingo, casino night, talent show, movies on the flight deck (when we are deployed down south), fishing and ship BBQ’s. You can expect to work hard, have fun, and enjoy your tour.
BOUTWELL MISSION
The CGC BOUTWELL is a multi-mission platform with the primary mission being Law Enforcement. But in addition to law enforcement the CGC Boutwell is also involved in Search and Rescue, Alien Migration Interdiction Operation (AMIO), Alaskan Fisheries Patrols, and Joint Services Operations in other parts of the world. Our schedule is usually 3 months underway followed by 3 months in port.
