If you are homeless, you have the same rights and privileges in applying for SSI benefits as someone who is not homeless. |

Does living in an institution affect my SSI benefits? |
Yes. Living in a shelter, medical treatment facility, or a correctional facility may affect your SSI benefits. In addition, each year the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides grants to institutions, known as safe havens, that provide very low–cost supportive housing to homeless persons who are unwilling or unable to participate in mental health treatment programs or to receive other supportive services. A person living in a safe haven will not have his or her SSI benefits reduced for the support and maintenance provided by the safe haven. | ||||||||
