Campaign Seeks to Decriminalize Media’s Responsibility

In December, the Voice of Freedom Public Foundation launched a national campaign entitled “Criminal Prosecution for Speech is Inadmissible.” The campaign employed televised public service announcements, and the dissemination of an informational newsletter and posters among Parliament members, Government officials and the public to advocate for changes to the Kyrgyz Republic’s criminal code which currently assigns criminal liability to journalistic publications.

A roundtable attended by Parliament members, journalists and lawyers served as the kick-off event for the campaign, which was funded by Freedom House and USAID, and received support from the Media Representative Institute, Internews- Kyrgyzstan, and journalists across the country.
