The Salem VA Medical Center is located in Salem, Virginia and serves veterans throughout the State of Virginia for psychiatric care and southwestern Virginia for medical and surgical care. The Salem VAMC also has Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) in Danville and Tazewell serving the counties of Patrick, Henry, Pittsylvania, Tazewell, Bland, Buchanan, Giles, Russell, and Wythe in southwest Virginia.

The Medical Center serves as a tertiary referral center and is classified as a Clinical Referral Level I Facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research. Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine & rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics, and extended care.

AFFILIATIONS

 

  • The Salem VAMC has active affiliations with the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Salem VAMC is located approximately 2 hours from the University. Over 200 University residents, interns, and students are trained at the Salem VAMC each year.
  • With the Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Salem VAMC is actively involved with training medical students in each year of their studies, their first class is currently in their second year.
  • We have a major role in training nursing students throughout our affiliations with the University of Virginia, Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Western Community College, Radford University, ECPI, Duke University, Liberty University, Graceland College, College of Health Sciences, and Old Dominion University.
  • In addition, 29 associated health-training programs are offered in affiliation with 44 colleges and universities. A formalized sharing agreement is maintained with Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for radiation therapy. Other sharing agreements include allergy, gynecology, dermatology, oncology, ophthalmology, teleradiology, and mammography with local health providers.
