General Information:

The Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center is located in Clarksburg, West Virginia and serves a veteran population of approximately 70,000 in north central West Virginia and adjacent counties in Maryland, Ohio and Pennsylvania.  In FY07 the medical center treated 19,554 unique patients through 216,090 outpatient visits and 3,541 admissions.

 

Inpatient services include acute medicine, surgery, acute psychiatry, Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (SARRTP), PTSD Residential Rehabilitation Program (PRRP), Psychosocial Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (PRRTP) and nursing home care.

 

Outpatient services include ambulatory surgery, audiology, cardiology, dental, dermatology, diabetes, ENT, gastroenterology, general internal medicine, general surgery, gynecology, hematology/oncology, infectious disease, nephrology, nutrition, occupational therapy, ophthalmology, optometry, pain, physical therapy, podiatry, primary care, prosthetics, behavioral medicine (including substance abuse, telepsychiatry, PTSD, etc.) pulmonology, recreation therapy, rheumatology, social work, speech pathology, urology and vascular surgery.

 

Ancillary and diagnostic services include CT, EKG, laboratory, MRI, nuclear medicine, pharmacy, radiology, respiratory therapy and ultrasound.

Community and non-institutional care services include Contract Nursing Home, Homemakers Home Health Aide, Adult Day Care, Residential Care, Respite, Hoptel and Care Coordination/Home Telehealth programs.

JCAHO:

The Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center currently maintains Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations accreditation for Acute Hospital Care, Mental Health Specialty Care, Home Care and Long Term Care. The Medical Center was last surveyed in September 2005.  In conjunction with the VA Stars & Stripes Healthcare Network (VISN 4), the Medical Center is participating in the Voluntary Unannounced Survey Program.

 

 

Affiliations:
Over sixty residents/fellows from various affiliation agreements rotate through the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in a typical fiscal year.  Major affiliations include West Virginia University Schools of Medicine, and Dentistry located in Morgantown, West Virginia and United Hospital Center Family Medicine Program.  Allied health affiliations are also maintained with West Virginia University Schools of Clinical & Counseling Psychology, Pharmacy, Nursing, Social Work, OT & PT, Medical Technology, Dietetics, Speech Pathology & Audiology.  Other college affiliations include Alderson-Broaddus College (PA, Nursing, Recreation Therapy); Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa. (Clinical Psychology); Fairmont State University (Nursing, MLT, PT Assistant, Health Information Technology, Food Service Management); Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio (PA); Marshall University (Dietetics, Recreation Therapy); Misericordia College in Dallas, Pa. Research:
The Research & Development (R&D) Program at the Louis A. Johnson VAMC continues to grow.  Currently, there are five active projects.  Researchers are involved in a 12-year “Prostate Cancer Intervention versus Observation” Study, are participating in studies that focus on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Bioterrorism, and recently received approval for a Merit Review on Cardiac Myocytes.  Total research funding from VA and NIH sources is approximately $1,300,000.  In addition, the Clarksburg R&D staff are preparing for a NCQA accreditation site visit scheduled to occur on October 24, 2005.
