Facility Picture

Nestled in Pennsylvania Dutch Country near Hershey, the chocolate capital of the United States, you will find the VAMC, Lebanon, PA. The medical center consists of a main campus in Lebanon plus Community Based Clinics in Camp Hill, York, Reading, Lancaster, and Pottsville, PA, serving the veterans of 13 counties in south central Pennsylvania.    

 

The Lebanon VAMC is a part of Veterans Integrated Service Network 4, The Stars and Stripes Network, which includes facilities in Philadelphia, Coatesville, Wilkes-Barre, Altoona, Pittsburgh, Butler and Erie PA plus the Wilmington DE and Clarksburg WV VA Medical Centers.

 

Lebanon VAMC provides acute medical, surgical, and behavioral health care utilizing 7 ICU beds and 43 acute beds.  Inpatient Hospice Care is provided in 15 beds and Nursing Home Care, (short stay and long stay) is provided to inpatients utilizing 120 nursing home care beds.  A full range of home care and community services are provided including; Home Based Primary Care, Homemaker Home Health Care, Community Residential Care, Adult Day Health Care and Homeless veteran care.  

 

Outpatient care includes Primary Care and Specialty Services Care.  The recent addition of specialized diagnostic services (MRI and Nuclear Medicine) and the planned completion of the new ICU/Urgent Care clinical addition enhances this ever growing, constantly improving facility.

 

Lebanon VAMC is a teaching hospital, providing this wide range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and research.  Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, acute inpatient care, and long-term care in active affiliation with the Penn State University Medical School, based at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA.  Over 250 University fellows, residents, and students are trained at the Lebanon VA Medical Center each year.  The Medical Center maintains 45 other academic affiliations in a wide variety of disciplines, offering training opportunities to over 150 students annually. 

 

Research: The Lebanon VA Medical Center has a small but growing Research and Development program, including studies in prostate cancer prevention and treatment of podiatric diseases, all of which enhance our ability to provide state-of-the-art medical care to our veteran patients.  Other major areas of research include oncology, cardiovascular disease, and nephrology.  During fiscal year 2003, there were 8 active Research Principal Investigators and 10 active research projects at the Lebanon VA Medical Center.  The total research funding for fiscal year 2003 from VA, NIH, and industry sources was approximately $870,000.  A joint research Lab opened in July 2003 with the Affiliate Penn State School of Medicine.  The lab is located on the grounds of the Lebanon VA.

 

Labor Relations: The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE) Local 1966 AFL-CIO is the exclusive representative of bargaining unit employees. The bargaining unit includes all non-supervisory wage-grade, general schedule and canteen service employees and all non-supervisory professional employees, staff physicians, registered nurses, and nurse anesthetists.

 

Administrative support is given to a Vet Center located in nearby Harrisburg, PA, and a National Cemetery located at Fort Indiantown Gap.
