The Philadelphia VA Medical Center has the distinction of being awarded several National Research Centers of Excellence including: Parkinson’s Disease Research, Education and Clinical Center (PADRECC); Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC); Center for Health Equity, Research and Promotion (CHERP); Center of Excellence for Substance Abuse Treatment and Education (CESATE) and Regional Sleep Center. Philadelphia VAMC is home to a Polytrauma Rehabilitation Network Site and provides a high level of expert care, and clinical and ancillary resources for the OIF/OEF veteran population.
The PVAMC is affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania’s Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Dental Medicine. Research is an important component of the Medical Center’s mission. There are more than 225 research projects underway involving all clinical disciplines, with more than 155 investigators and technicians. Major research emphasis includes: substance abuse, nutrition, Rheumatology-Immunology, cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology-oncology, urology, anesthesiology, orthopedics, general surgery, rehabilitation medicine, Gulf War illnesses, Hepatitis C and health services research and development.
