SPECIAL PROGRAMS

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (Endostent Repair): In 2000, the Vascular Surgery Department and the Interventional Radiology Department began performing stent-graft repair for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). This minimally invasive surgery, which is performed by physician specialists from Interventional Radiology and Vascular Surgery, requires no time in intensive care, no blood transfusions and only an overnight stay in the hospital. The latest advance of aortic aneurysms is placing aortic stents through an endovascular approach. The stent excludes the aneurysm from the general circulation and this minimally invasive procedure avoids the complications associated with open operative repair. The Oklahoma City VA Medical Center is one of only two hospitals in Oklahoma City and one of three in the State of Oklahoma offering this procedure. This interdisciplinary team approach benefits patients because it combines the expertise of two specialties, Vascular Surgery and Interventional Radiology. The future for this procedure is to be performed on an outpatient basis. In 2000, 10 and 12 of these procedures were performed during 2000 and 2001 respectively. That number has increased to 26 procedures performed in 2002.

Tri-Fab: Tri-Fab is a program designed to build state of the art prosthetic devices for veteran amputees. The goals of the Tri-Fab program are to develop a system for the provision of artificial mobility aids that is cost-effective, customer driven, and consistent with the goals of the Vision for Change. Tri-Fab stands for the triangular configuration of fabrication sites. This includes three primary central fabrication sites equipped with Automated Fabrication of Mobility Aids (AFMA) systems in Oklahoma City, Houston, and Little Rock. In addition, two secondary (one-person) labs will be located in Jackson and New Orleans. A rotating Prosthetist/Orthotist will service Alexandria, Biloxi, Fayetteville, Muskogee, and Shreveport. To date the program has been very successful based on feedback from users. The program is designed to increase veteran awareness of the latest treatment methods available, and to take existing services a step further by reducing application times, increasing time spent in the evaluation process and improving patient satisfaction. Established in 1998, this program has generated a cost avoidance for VISN 16 in the millions of dollars.

State Veterans Homes: This medical center has jurisdictional responsibility for four of six Veterans State Homes (Vet Centers) in Oklahoma, including Ardmore, Clinton, Norman, and Sulphur. We have established a very positive rapport and integration with these facilities. Specific achievements have been made in the area of Pharmacy for the provision and dispensing of medications for VA eligible veterans, consultation for specialized treatment/care needs of Alzheimer patients and the coordination of placement and long-term treatment needs of chronic psychiatric patients. We have developed and implemented sharing agreements for Diagnostic Radiology Interpretations for all four facilities. A fifth facility was recently completed in Lawton, Oklahoma with plans for VA contract and sharing agreement services.

Academic Partners
