Ames Laboratory is in central Iowa on the campus of Iowa State University. If you are coming from another state, it is best to use the Des Moines Airport. From there, you may travel one of two ways to get to Interstate 35 to Ames: through downtown Des Moines to I-235; or around Des Moines Highway 5/65 Bypass. The first route is shorter but much more complicated and often congested, especially during peak commuting hours. It is not recommended for first-time visitors who are driving themselves. The latter route is longer but much simpler to navigate. Also, traveling this route is usually very swift and non-stop.
