Hurricane Claudette

IMAGE: Hurricane Claudette

High-resolution image (519 Kb)

The crew of the International Space Station had a great seat from which to observe Tropical Storm Claudette as it became a Category 1 hurricane. The storm came ashore with high winds up to 129 kilometers (80 miles) per hour and heavy rains that also drenched its Houston home base and the Coastal Bend of Texas. This digital image was recorded at 8:26:36 CDT (13:26:36 GMT), July 15, 2003. The view looks north from the coast near Brownsville, Texas, at the Mexico border. The western-most feeder bands had already crossed the coastline. Claudette made landfall near Matagorda Bay, Texas, shortly after this image was taken.

Astronaut photograph ISS007-E-10244 was taken with an electronic still camera equipped with a 50-mm lens on July 15, 2003 at 8:26:36 CDT (13:26:36 GMT). The image is provided by the Earth Sciences and Image Analysis Laboratory at Johnson Space Center. Additional images taken by astronauts and cosmonauts can be viewed at the NASA-JSC Gateway to Astronaut Photography of Earth.
