Data from the
Central Personnel Data File

The Central Personnel Data File (CPDF) contains data on Federal civilian employees.  It consists of two parts:

  • The Dynamics File records personnel actions such as hiring and separating employees. It includes all Executive Branch agencies except the U.S. Postal Service, the Postal Rate Commission, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the National Security Agency, the Defense Imagery and Mapping Agency, the Tennessee Valley Authority, the White House Office, the Office of the Vice President, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, and the Defense Intelligence Agency.   Non-appropriated fund employees in Defense activities, Commissioned Corps employees, and foreign nationals employed outside the United States and its territories are also excluded.  The Judicial Branch is excluded.  The Legislative Branch is excluded except for the Government Printing Office, the U.S. Tax Court, and selected commissions.

  • The Status File records demographic information, job information, the agency and location of employees, and other aspects of the on-board Federal workforce.  It contains the same agencies as the Dynamics File except the Status File also includes data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

All of the information below is from the Status File of the Central Personnel Data File (CPDF).
