Local Effort Part of Nationwide American Heart Month Initiative Aimed
at Spreading the Word About Women and Heart Disease

WHAT:  As part of February's American Heart Month activities, (insert organization name) in (insert city) will join thousands of Americans in celebrating National Wear Red Day by (hosting/organizing, etc.) (insert event name/activity description).  The effort is aimed at raising awareness among local women that heart disease is their #1 health threat.

(Insert organization name) activities are in support of National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 1, 2008. On this day, women and men across the country will wear red to unite in the national movement to give women a personal and urgent wakeup call about their risk of heart disease.  Everyone can participate by showing off a favorite red dress, shirt, or tie, or by wearing the Red Dress Pin (available at www.hearttruth.gov).

WHY:  Although significant progress has been made increasing awareness among womenfrom 34 percent in 2000 to 57 percent in 2006—most women fail to make the connection between risk factors and their personal risk of developing heart disease.  By wearing red on National Wear Red Day and participating in (insert name of event/activity), people in (insert local city) will join thousands of individuals across the country in a unified effort to help raise awareness that heart disease is the #1 killer of women.

(Insert organization name) joins The Heart Truth, a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease, and other groups in support of National Wear Red Day.  The campaign launched the Red Dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness in 2002 to deliver an urgent wakeup call to American women.  A simple Red Dress works as a visual red alert to get the message heard loud and clear:  "Heart Disease Doesn't Care What You Wear—It's the #1 Killer of Women."
