Vaccine Safety
CDC Statement Regarding the Institute of Medicine’s Report on Vaccine Safety Research, Data Access, and Public Trust
February 17, 2005

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) appreciates the effort and thought which went into the Institute of Medicine (IOM) committee’s “Vaccine Safety Research, Data Access, and Public Trust” report released on February 17, 2005. The report will enhance CDC’s deliberations concerning the important areas of vaccine safety research, data access and public trust.

CDC shares with the IOM committee a strong commitment to the overarching principles which guided the committee’s deliberations on how CDC should share vaccine safety data and whether, when, and how CDC should release preliminary findings from vaccine safety investigations.

These principles, namely independence and transparency in all procedures used, fairness for all participants, and protection of confidentiality of individually identifiable medical information will continue to guide CDC as it carries out its detailed review of the report’s 28 recommendations and assesses them for possible implementation.

CDC places a high priority on vaccine safety and the integrity and credibility of its vaccine safety research and data sharing programs. CDC is grateful to the individual scientists on the IOM Committee and IOM staff members for their dedicated and valuable service.
