2006 Performance Profiles of Major Energy Companies

Supplemental Tables

This is a copy of the supplemental detailed tables that are part of Performance Profiles of Major Energy Producers 2006, which EIA released December 18, 2007. A file containing all of the detailed statistical tables in Excel-format also is available.

A small number of prior year data values changed from last year's 2005 report as the result of corrections made by some companies during EIA's audit of the current year's survey submissions. Typically, these differences are immaterial at the company level, and often do not show up in the aggregate.

Highlights from the upcoming report, Performance Profiles of Major Energy Producers 2006, include:

  • Financial Reporting Companies (FRS) companies earned $131 billion in 2006 (Table B2), the highest net income in the history of the FRS survey, dating back to 1974.
  • FRS companies had a 27.0 percent return on stockholders’ equity in 2006, 9.6 percentage points higher than the return on stockholder’s equity for All Manufacturing Companies as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau (Table B3).
  • Oil and gas production was the most profitable line of business, providing $92 billion in net income in 2006 and a return on net investment in place (ROI) of 20.4 percent (Tables B6 and B7).
  • Cash flow from operations increased 10 percent, in constant dollars, from 2005 to $194 billion in 2006, the highest level reported since the FRS survey began collecting this information in 1986 (Table B11).
  • Capital expenditures (Additions to PP&E plus Additions to Investments and Advances) increased 42 percent, in constant dollars, to $195 billion in 2006 (Table B7).
