Project Focus
Managing Conflict in the Horn of Africa

Background
John Prendergast is a director of African affairs at the National Security Council under an Institute executive fellowship. His portfolio includes the Horn, East Africa, and the Indian Ocean islands. For eight years, Prendergast directed the Horn of Africa project at the Center of Concern and has been a visiting fellow at the University of Maryland's Center for International Development and Conflict Management. He has worked with a variety of relief and development NGOs, UN and government agencies, and human rights organizations in Africa, Europe and the U.S. Prendergast has authored numerous articles in magazines, newspapers and journals. He has also authored or co-athored several books, including Crisis Response: Humanitarian Band-Aids in Sudan and Somalia, Preventing Violent Conflict: A Guide for Practitioners, and Front Line Diplomacy: Humanitarian Aid and Conflict in Africa. Prendergast received his M.A. in international development from American University.
