U.S. Civil War Regimental Histories

U.S. Civil War Regimental Histories in the Library of Congress

Introduction

Regimental histories are valuable research sources that offer a unique perspective for the study of the Civil War. They provide details on the organization and achievements of a particular unit, often focusing on wartime activities. This finding aid focuses on Civil War regimental histories located in the Library's general collections and is arranged by Union and Confederate state units. While the majority of the units represented in this guide are regiments, some brigades, companies, and other units are also listed here.

For most of the states listed in the Table of Contents (right-hand column of this page), military units are arranged by arm of service (Infantry, Cavalry, Artillery, Engineers), and then listed either numerically or alphabetically within each arm of service. The name of each unit on the list is hyperlinked, and each link generates a live search of the Library of Congress Online Catalog which lists the books about the unit. After viewing the search results, you can use your browser's "Back" button to navigate back to this guide. Researchers can also search the online catalog directly by author, title, subject, or keyword.

Of the states, territories, and organizations listed in the Table of Contents, there are a few--Alabama, Arizona, California, Louisana, New Mexico, Texas, Virginia, and the District of Columbia for the Union forces; Arizona and the Confederate Army Corps of Engineers for the Confederate forces--for which there are only a few published regimental histories. For these states and territories, the links connect directly to the Library of Congress Online Catalog. Please note: depending on the speed of your Internet connection, it will probably take a few moments to connect to the online catalog.

In addition to published unit histories, this finding aid includes materials such as personal narratives (letters, diaries, and reminiscences), unit rosters, reunion proceedings, and some other materials which include unit information.
