Microbe Power! Microbe Power!

David C. Holzman

Abstract

In the face of rising energy demands, dwindling resources, and concerns over pollution, a group of scientists has seized on organic waste from homes, food processing, and other sources as an energy feedstock for devices called microbial fuel cells (MFCs) . MFCs use bacteria to break down organic waste products, converting converting the energy of their chemical bonds into electricity and hydrogen. Recent breakthroughs in this field are bringing these devices closer to being a commercial reality. Much work still remains to be done, however, to scale the devices up for commercial use and to overcome their problem of low power density.
