Division of Reproductive Health: Activities—Services Management, Research & Translation

 Back to Activities

CDC's Division of Reproductive Health Services Management, Research and Translation (SMART) team is improving reproductive health at home and abroad by building partner capacity through:

  • Developing evidence-based tools
  • Conducting research
  • Communicating information
  • Providing technical assistance

These activities work together to support health services and advance public health action.

The following are SMART’s projects and tools:

Interactive Atlas of Reproductive HealthGIS map image
The Interactive Atlas of Reproductive Health is a web-based interactive geographic information system (GIS) dedicated to reproductive health issues such as infant mortality, fertility, and low birth weight. The atlas provides viewers with access to a unique collection of geographic datasets that provide reproductive health indicators.

Reproductive Health in CrisesTool Kit cover
The goal of this program is to improve the health of refugees and internally displac
ed persons following a humanitarian emergency.  The focus of this program is to understand the burden, causes, and risk factors for negative reproductive health outcomes. Assessing barriers to health care access also helps to guide reproductive health policies, programs and interventions. The Reproductive Health Assessment Toolkit for Conflict Affected Women enables field staff to collect data to inform program planning, monitoring, evaluation, and advocacy.

Reproductive Health Needs of Women Following a Disaster
Image of hurricaneCDC's Division of Reproductive Health (DRH) is developing quantitative assessment tools that can provide local decision-makers and program planners with information about the reproductive health needs of women affected by disaster. The assessments cover the following topics: family stressors, safe motherhood, infant and child health, family planning, sexually transmitted infections, and violence. Also, CDC's DRH is developing a set of procedures to accompany these assessment tools that can be routinely implemented by local health departments.

Tobacco Use and Pregnancy
CDC's Division of Reproductive Health continues to conduct research and surveillance on tobacco use and pregnancy. This site provides data and statistics, descriptions of activities, and publications on this issue. The Maternal Child Health Smoking Attributable Mortality, Morbidity, and Economic Costs Software (MCH SAMMEC) is an online tool to estimate annual smoking-attributable medical expenditures, deaths, and years of potential life lost for infants exposed to tobacco in the United States.

Integrating HIV and Other Prevention Programs into Reproductive Health and Community Settings
The purpose of this five-year Cooperative Agreement is to
support integration of HIV prevention services in reproductive health settings through intensive technical assistance. Regional Training Centers (RTCs) in each of the 10 Department of Health and Human Services Regions develop and deliver training and technical assistance to reproductive health providers on scientifically grounded interventions.

Patient Flow Analysis (PFA) and WinPFA
PFA image
This software is a public domain computer application that helps to analyze and measure the performance of individual clinics. The reports assist the user in identifying problems in client flow, determining personnel and space needs, and document the personnel costs associated with client visits.
