About Ducks Unlimited
Ducks Unlimited, Inc. (DU) was established
in the
1930's by conservation-minded outdoorsmen to restore
wetlands in response to dwindling waterfowl populations
and declining habitat. Since then, DU has conserved
over 10 million acres of habitat, by focusing on
a strong scientific understanding of waterfowl and
their
habitat. DU developed the Atlantic Coast Ecosystem
Initiative (ACEI) to protect, restore and enhance
coastal habitats important to fish and wildlife in
the North
Atlantic Coastal Region, from the southern shores
of the Delaware Bay through Maine.
About the Partnership
The NOAA/Ducks Unlimited Habitat Restoration Partnership
began in 2001. During the partnership, $225,000 of
NOAA funds were provided and matched 1:1 by Ducks Unlimited
to support the ACEI. DU developed eight projects in
consultation with the NOAA CRP staff from priority
sites selected based on their benefits to living marine
resources; these same projects typically benefit waterfowl
as well. The projects are in various phases of implementation
and will restore degraded coastal habitats from Long
Island, NY to the Gulf of Maine.
