We are saddened to announce the death of Dr. Clifton Herman Johnson, founder and director emeritus of the Amistad Research Center. Dr. Johnson passed away on May 21 at his home in Eugene, Oregon.
A celebration of life was held July 11
at First Congregational Church in Eugene. The Amistad Research Center sponsored "A Celebration of the Life of Clifton H. Johnson, Ph.D" at the New Orleans Museum of Art on Saturday, November 1, 2008, at 2 pm

Amistad was recently awarded a multi-year grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR), which will allow the Center to implement state of the art collections management software and make several collections containing records of civil rights organizations accessible to scholars and researchers for the first time. As part of a collaborative project, Amistad, Emory University, and the Robert W. Woodruff Library at the Atlanta University Center will create online finding aids of their related holdings.

In 2005, Dr. Conchetta Fulton began organizing the records of the Alpha Beta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc., the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American women.  The records date from ca. 1937 to 2006 and document activities of the Alpha Beta Omega Chapter, as well as the national organization.
