Figure 5.6 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past year alcohol dependence among youths aged 12 to 17, by State, for 2000 and 2001. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (2.63 to 3.58 percent) were Alaska, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, and West Virginia. States in the next highest group (2.13 to 2.62 percent) were Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, Oregon, and Wyoming. States in the mid group (1.93 to 2.12 percent) were Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Maryland, Mississippi, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Utah, Vermont, and Wisconsin. States in the next lowest group (1.66 to 1.92 percent) were California, Delaware, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Texas. States in the lowest group (1.33 to 1.65 percent) were District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, and Virginia.
