Figure 4.7 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past month use of cigarettes among persons aged 18 to 25, by State, for 2000 and 2001. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (44.00 to 46.88 percent) were Colorado, Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming. States in the next highest group (42.49 to 43.99 percent) were Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Wisconsin. States in the mid group (39.17 to 42.48 percent) were Alaska, Delaware, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Montana, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Tennessee. States in the next lowest group (36.54 to 39.16 percent) were Arizona, Arkansas, Hawaii, Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, South Carolina, and Virginia. States in the lowest group (25.33 to 36.53 percent) were Alabama, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Texas, Utah, and Washington.
