Figure 4.4 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past month use of any tobacco product among persons aged 26 or older, by State, for 2000 and 2001. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (32.72 to 37.67 percent) were Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Wyoming. States in the next highest group (30.33 to 32.71 percent) were Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and South Dakota. States in the mid group (28.67 to 30.32 percent) were Alaska, District of Columbia, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Vermont. States in the next lowest group (27.77 to 28.66 percent) were Arizona, Delaware, Idaho, Maine, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, and Washington. States in the lowest group (18.33 to 27.76 percent) were California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Utah, and Wisconsin.
