Figure 4.2 is a U.S. map showing percentages reporting past month use of any tobacco product among youths aged 12 to 17, by State, for 2000 and 2001. States listed here in alphabetical order within each group were divided into five groups based on the magnitude of their percentages. States in the highest group (18.71 to 25.53 percent) were Alaska, Kentucky, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming. States in the next highest group (17.61 to 18.70 percent) were Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin. States in the mid group (16.43 to 17.60 percent) were Alabama, Delaware, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, and Pennsylvania. States in the next lowest group (13.56 to 16.42 percent) were Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Jersey, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, and Washington. States in the lowest group (8.69 to 13.55 percent) were Arizona, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, New York, Oregon, Utah, and Virginia.
