State Energy Data Report 1997

The Energy Information Administration’s State Energy Data Report 1997 (SEDR) presents State and national energy consumption statistics in several dimensions. First, all major sources of energy are covered, including petroleum, natural gas, coal, nuclear electric power, hydroelectric power, biomass, and other sources. Second, the data report energy use by major economic sector—residential, commercial, industrial, transportation, and electric utilities. Third, data are provided in both physical units (e.g., barrels, cubic feet, tons, kilowatthours) and  British thermal units (Btu). Finally, the data are available annually in extensive time series. In the published report, data are presented for 1960 through 1985 at 5-year intervals and from 1985 through 1997 annually. All annual data from 1960 through 1997 are accessible online (see below for Website addresses).

Unique to SEDR are the detailed data on petroleum, including petroleum consumption by product and by sector at the State and national levels (see table). The report and the underlying database offer the data to construct such overviews for any State in any year from 1960 through 1997, or to develop time series for any selected element in the table.
